Chelsea
midfielder Enzo Fernandez will miss the remainder of the season after
undergoing groin surgery.
The Argentine has been suffering for several weeks with a hernia and gave a
largely ineffectual performance during his team’s chastening 5-0 defeat to
Premier League leaders Arsenal on Tuesday.
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in February 2023 for a then British-record
£106.8m fee from Benfica, will miss the Blues final six games of the season
beginning with Saturday's visit to Aston Villa.
A Chelsea statement on Thursday night read: "Enzo Fernandez has today
undergone successful surgery on a groin issue and will now begin a period of
rehabilitation, sidelining him for the remainder of Chelsea’s 2023/24
season.
"The 23-year-old midfielder will work with the club's medical department on
his rehabilitation at Cobham."
Fernandez, who has scored three goals in 28 league appearances this season,
will now be hoping he can recover in time from the surgery to be available
for Argentina at this summer's Copa America.
