Sheva Tips Tie In Blues' Favour  (Sky Sports)

Porto 1 Chelsea 1

Andrei Shevchenko scores against PortoAndrei Shevchenko's goal saw Chelsea claim a 1-1 draw at Porto and earn reward for a solid performance on the Special One's return to Estadio do Dragao.

The draw leaves Chelsea in pole position to claim a quarter-final place in the UEFA Champions League and Jose Mourinho will be satisfied, particularly after suffering the double blow of an injury to John Terry and then falling a goal behind.

Chelsea started well - Didier Drogba's surge and shot and Michael Ballack's header wide alluded to the visitors' early threat.

But Mourinho was soon given cause for concern, not initially by a sporadic Porto but injuries to Drogba and John Terry. Drogba ran off his but Terry was unable to do likewise after turning an ankle.

Michael Essien dropped back into defence to replace his captain and Chelsea belatedly introduced substitute Arjen Robben - belatedly because by the time Robben got on to the pitch Chelsea were a goal down.

Raul Meireles latched on to a Claude Makelele clearance in the 11th minute and volleyed the ball back, a deflection off the knee of Frank Lampard seeing the ball zip past Petr Cech's extended left arm and into the bottom corner.

Chelsea were rattled but crucially struck back within five minutes. Robben slalomed towards the edge of the area and played in Shevchenko whose crisp finish into the bottom corner demonstrated the Ukrainian is still sure of touch with the goal in sight.

Cech prevented the hosts from reclaiming the lead in the 20th minute when, after Ricardo Quaresma had turned sharply on the edge of the area, the Czech was out of his goal to thwart Lisandro Lopes.

Drogba drifted in from Lampard's free-kick but his header lacked conviction as Helton, not for the first time in the half, found himself in no-man's land.

Quaresma's insistence on falling to ground under the merest of contact did not endear him to the visitors for whom Essien was quick to offer the player a more genuine reason to lie in a heap after a challenge that took both ball and man.

The mercurial Portuguese showed his brilliant side five minutes before half-time, though, cutting across the ball with his right-foot he dispatched a shot which struck the bar and rebounded to safety for the relieved visitors.

Jon Obi Mikel was introduced for the second half by Mourinho - surprisingly in place of Robben who himself was a substitute in the first half.

Mourinho was already content with his lot - his team played with notable conservatism and if the first half had offered more entertainment than one had expected pre-match, the second half reverted to cautious type.

Jesualdo Ferreira's team were similarly preoccupied by thoughts of containment. Goalscorer Meireles was withdrawn in favour of Marek Cech and the hosts barely created a chance.

Drogba snapped a shot wide and Shevchenko shot over before the move of the second half ended with Drogba striking the foot of the near post from a narrow angle 12 minutes from time.

Lampard shot into the arms of Helton as The Blues ended the match much the likelier winners and confident, even without the cushion of a first leg victory, of completing their task in two weeks' time at Stamford Bridge.
