Charlton Win 5-4 on Penalties

Geremi goes for the ball during the Charlton cup tieCharlton caused a major Carling Cup upset at Stamford Bridge, holding on for a 1-1 draw against Chelsea before defeating the holders 5-4 on penalties.

Bryan Hughes scored the winning spot kick for the Addicks, who found the net with all five attempts, but goalkeeper Stephane Andersen will take much of the credit for blocking Robert Huth's penalty.

Darren Bent cancelled out John Terry's goal for Chelsea, with both goals in the first half, but Andersen needed to be in inspired form to take the match into extra time, saving brilliantly from Frank Lampard moments after Chelsea's top scorer had been sent on in a bid to swing the match in the home side's favour.

The Danish keeper had also produced a stunning save to deny Eidur Gudjohnsen after the best move of the night from the Premiership champions, involving Arjen Robben and Hernan Crespo and ending with Gudjohnsen's first time shot from 18 yards.

Chelsea began at a steady pace, with Paulo Ferreira testing Andersen with a dipping shot from distance and Crespo heading narrowly wide from a Wayne Bridge cross.

Their attacking increased in intensity as the half wore on and they finally went ahead in the 41st minute, when Terry powered in a trademark header from Robben's corner.

However, Chelsea's lead lasted only four minutes and was surrendered after a rare lapse in concentration in defence, as Huth failed to put enough weight on his header back to Carlo Cudicini and Bent nipped in to score with a low left-foot shot.

Chelsea were always in the ascendancy after the interval and Terry went close to restoring their lead with a sliced shot from 20 yards which curled away from the top corner before Shaun Wright-Phillips dragged a shot wide after a clever turn.

Gudjohsen and Lampard were then denied by Andersen in a frantic five-minute spell, although Charlton nearly stole victory inside 90 minutes when Cudicini was forced to punch Bothroyd's viciously swerving shot over the crossbar.

Lampard volleyed into the side-netting as Jose Mourinho's side came straight out of the blocks in extra time but for all their dominance they could not find a way through as Charlton defended deeper and deeper.

Huth's misery continued as he saw two goalbound shots blocked in the six-yard box and the Addicks held on for the shoot-out.

Robben and Bent traded successful kicks before Huth's torment was complete when his well-struck shot was punched away by Andersen at full stretch.

Bothroyd, Matt Holland, Hermann Hreidarsson and Hughes then kept their heads to put Charlton into the hat for round four.
