Eidur Gudjohnsen and Arjen Robben climbed off the substitutes' bench to fire Chelsea into the Carling Cup quarter final, with their extra time goals giving The Blues a 2-0 win against Newcastle.

Icelandic international Gudjohnsen was thrown on for the extra half-hour, after a goalless 90 minutes, and lashed home superbly from the edge of the area to finally break the dead-lock in a scrappy, hard-fought game.

Robben then made things secure in the second half of extra time with a simply breathtaking solo run and goal as Newcastle committed men forward. 

An underwhelming normal time had provided no goals but several key chances, and it was striker Mateja Kezman that spurned the most glorious early opportunity with many fans still finding their way to their seats.

A dreadful back pass from Andy O'Brien, a makeshift right back for the night, allowed Kezman to race onto the loose ball and round the onrushing Given.

However, goals have been at a premium for the young Serb, and he could not convert from a tight angle, to the relief of the partisan crowd.

Laurent Robert had an early sighter stopped comfortably, and the winger's set-pieces were a threat throughout despite Blues defender John Terry's aerial prowess.

Damien Johnson combined well down the right flank with Joe Cole, but wastefully drove wide when both Kezman and Damien Duff were screaming for a cut-back.

Johnson's nave tackle on Robert had the crowd shouting for a penalty, although the infringement was outside the box but, after another dangerous corner had forced Cudicini to tip over, it was Olivier Bernard who had The Magpies' best chance.

The full back raced through down the left after a fine Newcastle move and looked to have picked out the far corner only to see Cudicini produce a fine diving save to deflect the ball narrowly wide.

The second half proved more entertaining, although a frustrating lack of quality around the box was in evidence for both sides.

Titus Bramble's error nearly allowed Joe Cole a chance, but as the England midfielder waited for the ball to drop the Newcastle defender recovered to cover his own mistake.

A fine Chelsea move should finally have opened the scoring but after Tiago's beautiful control from Kezman's pass had put him clear, the Portuguese star toe poked wide with the goal at his mercy.

Bramble had a header scrambled away at the other end, and Given was alert to cut out a fine Lampard pass through for Robben.

Cudicini's fine night continued with an important diving stop to keep out a trademark Robert free-kick and Given stopped a powerful Robben shot with his chest from close range before the match moved into extra time.

Mourinho made the critical decision to throw on Gudjohnsen for Scott Parker- who had been simply excellent in front of the Chelsea back four all night.

The Chelsea boss' gamble paid dividends when the striker latched onto Robben's square pass, skipped inside and lashed a wonderful strike past Shay Given and into the back of the net off the inside of a post.

Newcastle pushed forward, and Chelsea nearly added a quick-fire second when Robben's deflected pass almost fell perfectly for Lampard, only for O'Brien to make a critical interception and put the ball out for a corner.

The Magpies pushed on through the last 15 minutes, but could find no way past the William Gallas and the immense John Terry - on this performance worth every penny of his reported new wage of 90,000 a week.

Just when it appeared Chelsea had shut up shop for the night, Robben received the ball on the left flank, with little support from his team-mates.

Unpeturbed, the flying Dutchman simply skipped inside, outpaced the entire defence and slotted home with consummate ease to continue an amazing start to his Chelsea career.

So The Blues move through, and Newcastle's long wait for silverware will see focus switch to Europe and the FA Cup in the coming weeks, whilst Mourinho's men continue their assault on four different competitions.
