Cool Blues Into Next Phase  (Sky Sports)

CSKA Moscow 0 Chelsea 1

Arjen RobbenChelsea booked their place in the next round of the UEFA Champions League after a hard fought 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow.

A freezing Lokomotiv Stadium was warmed up by a lively crowd, with Roman Abramovich looking for his charges to get the better of his countrymen and he will have been delighted to witness a win.

A tremendous first half display from Chelsea saw them go ahead through Arjen Robben - who was the best player by a long way on the evening.

CSKA came back strong and dominated the second 45 minutes, but they failed to level - although they did miss a penalty when Vagner Love blasted over just moments after the interval.

Chelsea began the game slowly allowing CSKA to have the majority of the possession.

The Russians won numerous corners, but failed to convert any - the nearest being Jiri Jarosik - who headed wide from Rolan Gusev's cross.

Despite sitting deep, Chelsea always looked dangerous on the break - with Damien Duff and Robben cutting in from each flank.

Robben was proving a real handful and showed CSKA a glimpse of what was to come with a great run and shot on 20 minutes.

Just moments later, the Russians failed to pick up Robben as he broke the deadlock in wonderful style.

The Dutchman picked up the ball on the right and fed Duff in on the edge of the area, who picked up the ball before back heeling into the path of Robben - who beat Sergey Semak with a fantastic feint - before coolly side footing into the corner leaving CSKA keeper Igor Akinfeev helpless.

Chelsea could and should have doubled their advantage ten minutes later. The Blues cleared a corner and Ricardo Carvalho fed Robben who delayed his pass for Eidur Gudjohsen, but the Icelander was forced around Akinfeev and he failed to find enough power to beat Semak - who cleared off the line.

Despite seeing a great deal of the ball, CSKA's first effort on goal did not come until just before the interval when Brazilian Love turned Carvalho on the edge of the area before unleashing a venomous drive which Petr Cech had to be at his best to parry round the post.

Robben was again causing chaos on the stroke of half time when he attempted to get on a long clearance, but went down under Semak's challenge - but fortunately for CSKA, referee Massimo De Santis waved play on.

Jose Mourinho would have been looking for his defence to keep its nerve in the second period, but just moments in CSKA were hand a golden opportunity to level.

Jarosik fed Yuri Zhirkov into the area and Glen Johnson dived in and got nowhere near the ball and left De Santis with one of his easiest decisions of the season as he gave the penalty. Fortunately for Chelsea the impressive Love blasted over with a shocking effort.

Despite missing, Love kept up his impressive game as he again turned Carvalho on the right before racing into the area, but Cech was off his line brilliantly to save at the striker's feet.

Moments later, Chelsea were forced to replace the injured William Gallas with Paulo Ferreira and that did little to settle the Blues back-line who were looking decidedly shaky following the restart.

Jarosik came closer from yet another corner, but again the Czech failed to get his header on target. He then tested his fellow countryman Cech with a stinging 25-yard drive, which Cech was forced to get down sharply too and push wide.

Chelsea were now facing a rear-guard action and Johnson again dived in rashly giving a way a dangerous free-kick on the right edge of the area, Gusev cleverly pulled the ball back for Sergei Ignashevitch, whose bullet drive deflected wide.

CSKA brought on Croatian Ivica Olic as they looked for the equaliser and he combined well with Vagner Love, while Mateja Kezman entered the fray for the visitors.

Chelsea endured a good 20-minute period of intense pressure, but they prevented any clear-cut chances.

With CSKA pushing forward, gaps began to appear and both Robben and Duff looked to take advantage, but the spark they had in the opening half was lacking.

Lampard almost doubled Chelsea's lead late on when he broke on the right edge of the area and fired at goal, but Akinfeev got down well at his near post.

Chelsea's have showed in The Premiership in recent weeks how good their attack is and this display underlined how good they are at the other end.

Mourinho's side are now into the next phase with two games to spare and nobody will relish a trip to West London.
