Mourinho's Men March On (Sky Sports)
Chelsea 3 FC Porto 1
Porto
were unable to upset their former boss Jose Mourinho as Didier Drogba
claimed his first goal in front of the Stamford Bridge fans.
Chelsea were good value for their 3-1 victory but substitute Benni McCarthy caused a little concern with a well-taken effort for the visitors.
It took John Terry only three minutes to restore the hosts' two-goal advantage after Alexei Smertin and Didier Drogba had already found the net.
The fans had barely settled in their seats when Smertin volleyed in his first goal for Chelsea on seven minutes. Damien Duff's cute pass to Eidur Gudjohnsen was hooked into the danger zone by the Icelander and an unmarked Smertin struck a decisive blow.
Drogba had an acrobatic attempt blocked by Costinha before Vitor Baia and Jose Bosingwa combined to snuff out Duff as the Irishman threatened. Porto had efforts themselves, but Diego's free kick and Luis Fabiano's shot were barely worthy of note.
Gudjohnsen shot across goal, just out of Drogba's reach, and Terry served notice of his intentions by beating Pepe in the air but headed Frank Lampard's centre well off target.
The European Cup holders finally managed a sustained spell of pressure before the break but Fabiano was unable to divert a Ricardo Costa shot on target and Costinha failed to connect with a dangerous cross.
Drogba looked like a man on a mission in the second period. He had already headed a decent opportunity over the bar when he claimed his first goal in front of the Stamford Bridge supporters. Duff's free kick led to the goal as Drogba unconventionally steered a header into the net with Baia all at sea in the 50th minute.
The introduction of McCarthy ignited Porto's attack as he caused problems at the back for the hosts. A free kick from the South African curled wide before he twisted and turned past Terry only for Petr Cech to parry the shot to safety.
The next time Cech was called into action, he could only beat out Carlos Alberto's shot straight to McCarthy, who returned it with interest. On closer inspection, Carlos Alberto's drive deflected off Terry's head to cause Cech to make the unimpressive stop.
Moments later, Lampard's inviting free kick was powered into the net by the inspirational Terry, who dived to convert in fabulous fashion. It ended all hope of this being an unnerving evening for his coach, Mourinho, who was reportedly spat on by a Porto fan beforehand - some reward for steering the club to glory last term.
Only an assistant referee's flag denied Drogba another goal from a Lampard set-piece as the Ivory Coast international was ruled off-side.
Substitute Mateja Kezman was
unable to profit from a Drogba run and Tiago had a shot saved late on, but
Chelsea ran out comfortable winners as Porto clearly lacked the
motivational qualities of their former coach.
