Lampard And Mutu Seal Chelsea Win (Sky Sports)
Chelsea 2 SS Lazio 1
Goals
from Frank Lampard and Adrian Mutu sealed Chelsea's second victory in the UEFA
Champions League, but Claudio Ranieris men were made to come from a goal down
against Lazio to move top of Group G.
Simone Inzaghi had given Roberto Mancini's
men a first half lead before Lampard conjured up a superb equaliser and Mutu
netted the winner to record only The Blues' second win in five games.
Sinisa Mihajlovic gifted Mutu a gilt-edged chance to give The Blues the lead
when he got the ball caught in between his feet and the Romanian forward took a
touch before firing in a tame effort that went harmlessly wide.
Lampard picked out Eidur Gudjohnsen with a glorious ball over the top on 20
minutes and with Lazio struggling to get back the Icelandic star failed to pick
out the on rushing Mutu and in the end the Italians cleared their lines.
Bernardo Corradi hit thin air as he tried a spectacular over-head kick, which
was as close to goal as Lazio got within the first half-hour until Inzaghi
scored a trademark predator's goal.
Massimo Oddo floated in a ball from the right to the back post to find Dejan
Stankovic unmarked and the Serbia & Montenegro star headed back across goal for
Inzaghi to nod home on 38.
Lampard almost sent his side in level when he gave Demetrio Albertini the slip
in midfield and let fly with a bullet left-foot shot from outside the box that
had Angelo Peruzzi beaten but sadly for Chelsea, smacked against the crossbar.
The West Londoners started the brighter of the two sides in the second-half with
Mutu just failing to connect with Lampard's pass in the box and Damien Duff cut
in well from the left to give himself a sight of goal but hit a weak right foot
effort straight at Peruzzi.
The equaliser finally came from the lively Lampard just before the hour mark
when Gudjohnsen picked him out on the edge of the box and the England midfielder
hit the ball first time on the outside of his right to score beyond Peruzzi.
Chelsea then made their supremacy pay when substitute Jesper Gronkjaer, on for
the ineffective Juan Sebastian Veron, drilled a ball in from the right and
Peruzzi initially saved well from Mutu's first effort before the ex-Parma man
slotted home at the second attempt.
Lazio pushed forward in search of an equaliser with Carlo Cudicini producing
fine saves from Albertini and from the head of Corradi but Ranieri's men held
firm to move to the top of Group G at the expense of their opponents.
