Floyd Hasselbaink's fortuitous goal was enough to give Chelsea a slender victory
over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
The Dutch striker bundled in his seventh goal of the season after David Seaman
parried Adrian Mutu's low driven cross against his shins.
The goal came as Chelsea - and Mutu in particular - enjoyed a period of
domination around the half hour mark.
Mutu's superb close control enabled him to skip away from the challenge of Sun
Jihai to power in the cross for the goal, just moments after Chelsea had fired a
warning shot via the same route.
The Romania international had crossed from the left and when Jesper Gronkjaer
returned the ball Frank Lampard was fractionally offside as he headed in.
Mutu had also cracked a first time shot straight at Seaman from Hasselbaink's
clever lay-off, but the spell of pressure during which Chelsea ultimately
wrapped up the points was not typical of this entertaining contest.
City had forged the first opening after just six minutes, when defender David
Sommeil volleyed just a foot too high from Michael Tarnat's right-wing
free-kick.
Then, shortly after Hasselbaink's goal, Tarnat crossed from the left and Robbie
Fowler powered in a header which Carlo Cudicini did well to tip against a post.
Nicolas Anelka was wrongly flagged offside as he chased Trevor Sinclair's
through ball, which would have left him one-on-one with Cudicini, and Shaun
Wright-Phillips was a constant menace to Chelsea down their left.
Kevin Keegan's men then threatened a grandstand finish after a tense second
half, during which Claudio Ranieri took off both Gronkjaer and Hasselbaink to
shore up his defence with Geremi and Robert Huth.
The visitors forced five late corners as they laid siege to the Chelsea goal and
Cudicini was at full strength to keep out Trevor Sinclair's 12-yard drive after
Antoine Sibierski had mis-kicked on the penalty spot.
