Blues March On As Group Winners (Sky Sports)
Besiktas JK 0 Chelsea 2
UEFA Champions League Group G
Late
goals from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Wayne Bridge earned Chelsea a 2-0 win
over Besiktas to confirm the Premiership leaders as winners of Group G.
A dull game appeared to be drifting towards a draw before Damien Duff came on
for Jesper Gronkjaer and set Hasselbaink up 13 minutes from time with an
exquisite pass on the edge of the Besiktas box.
Eight minutes later Hasselbaink turned provider, sliding the ball to another
substitute, Wayne Bridge, who drilled a low shot past Oscar Cordoba.
Up to Duff's late arrival, both teams seemed happy to settle for a goalless draw
that would see Chelsea through as group winners and Besiktas as runners-up.
A hail of missiles and toilet paper that delayed the opening of the second half
- apparently a protest against Uefa's decision to switch the game to Germany for
security reasons - was the most memorable moment of the night up to
Hasselbaink's goal.
But even after falling behind, Besiktas were happy to play out time. The
goalless scoreline between Sparta Prague and Lazio meant they were still going
through.
There was some poetic justice, therefore, when news came through of Sparta's
93rd minute winner. Inevitably, that was met by another hail of missiles - as
was each of Chelsea's goals.
Besiktas will not be missed in the last 16 - except by their fanatical support -
but Chelsea are showing signs of being capable of returning to this stadium for
the final in May.
Technically they were solid and controlled, dictating the pace of the game
throughout. Makalele and Lampard dominated the midfield and in Duff they have a
playmaker capable of turning any game.
They were also without their favoured Champions League strike partnership of
Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo. Justifiably, Chelsea will be a name most of
Europe will be hoping to avoid in Friday's draw for the last 16.
