Chelsea could be facing a third successive embarrassing early exit from Europe after Ben Wright scored a crucial late away goal for Viking Stavanger in the first round of the UEFA Cup.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had finally opened his account for the season  and Spanish midfielder Enrique De Lucas added the second, his first since his summer move from Espanyol, as Claudio Ranieri marked two years in charge of Chelsea.

But any hopes Chelsea may have harboured of a comfortably return leg in Norway disappeared with former Bristol City striker Wright's late goal.

Jesper Gronkjaer should have given Chelsea the lead after just 75 seconds but shot wide but Viking were quick to attack and only a brilliant reflex save from Carlo Cudicini stopped them from taking the lead after former Manchester United striker Erik Nevland set up Trygve Nygaard for a fierce drive.

And Chelsea had another let-off in the 20th minute when Nevland beat the offside trap on the right flank and crossed well for Morten Berre, but he missed his kick with only Cudicini to beat.

Chelsea finally threatened on 35 minutes when when Gianfranco Zola set up Hasselbaink. He slipped his shot past goalkeeper Frode Olsen but skipper Brede Hangeland was back covering in the six-yard box and cleared the ball.

Hasselbaink, alert to some poor control by Viking captain Brede Hangeland after 43 minutes, then nipped in to give the home side the lead, sidestepping keeper Frode Olsen before firing home off the legs of the unlucky Hangeland.

And Hasselbaink had a golden chance to double his tally but Olsen denied him with a brilliant point blank save after a jinking run.

Spaniard Quique de Lucas raced on to a pass from Jody Morris after 69 minutes and coolly lobbed Olsen to double Chelsea's advantage.

It should have been three after 71 minutes as De Lucas turned provider with a lovely cross from the right for Hasselbaink. But, with the goal at his mercy, he sent his diving header wide of the far post.

And then Wright then stunned Stamford Bridge when he came off the bench to convert Peter Kopteff's cross with just 12 seconds of normal time remaining - but it was all that Chelsea deserved after a mediocre display.
