Ben Reynolds reports

Tottenham produced the performance of their season to end their hoodoo against Chelsea and reach the Worthington Cup final with a magnificent 5-1 victory at White Hart Lane.

First-half goals from Steffen Iversen and Tim Sherwood were followed by strikes from Teddy Sheringham, Simon Davies and substitute Sergei Rebrov - Chelsea's only moment of solace coming from Mikael Forssell's drive a minute from time.

Spurs fans arrived at White Hart Lane well aware of their abject record against their west London rivals - no win over them since 1990 - but records are there to be broken, and Spurs did it in style.

Chelsea were second-best in every department as Glenn Hoddle's side banished 12 years of frustration to book a spot in Cardiff against Blackburn on February 24.

From the moment Steffen Iversen slid in to put Spurs ahead after two minutes, the tone was set for the entire evening.

Sherwood doubled the home side's lead 30 minutes later with a brilliantly struck shot from Darren Anderton's near-post corner, before Sheringham smashed a volley past Carlo Cudicini on 50 minutes following Iversen's excellent lay-off.

Chelsea's miserable night was completed when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was mistakenly sent off following a melee in the Spurs box to effectively end the contest.

From there Spurs pushed on, with Davies finishing off a fine move with a low drive inside Cudicini's near-post before Rebrov tapped in Oyvind Leonhardsen's cross from close range.

Starting the game a goal down from the first-leg, Spurs could not have asked for a better start.

Ledley King's chip into the box was cleverly left by Sheringham to allow Mauricio Taricco a clear run on goal. Although the Argentinan's drive was well parried by Cudicini, John Terry took an eternity to clear and Iversen slid in to put Spurs ahead after just 105 seconds.

Chelsea's attempted recovery was dealt a blow on 10 minutes when Boudewijn Zenden - back in the starting line-up in place of Gianfranco Zola - came off the worse following a challenge with Sheringham and had to be withdrawn, the Dutchman replaced by Sam Dalla Bona.

Gradually Chelsea looked to force their way back into the match, forcing a succession of corners and free-kicks, but with Spurs fans becoming increasingly nervous, their lead was doubled thanks to an excellent strike from Sherwood.

On 32 minutes a long ball was met by Gus Poyet on the stretch, who forced Cudicini into an acrobatic save, but from the resulting corner Sherwood met Anderton's near-post cross with an unerring drive that flew into the roof of the net.

Eidur Gudjohnsen came close to reducing the deficit with a swerving shot from 20 yards, but the ball flew just high and wide of Neil Sullivan's left-hand post.

Five minutes after the break Sheringham gave Spurs some breathing space with a swerving volley from 20 yards and their cause was then further helped by referee Mark Halsey's error.

Hasselbaink fouled Neil Sullivan in the Spurs area and in the handbags which ensued, Mario Melchiot struck out at Sheringham. Halsey thought it was Hasselbaink though, and sent the Dutchman off, depriving the Blues their main goal threat.

With the extra man, Tottenham exploited the additional space and Davies, who was a constant threat on the right, got the goal he deserved after a well-worked move.

With Iversen and former Chelsea favourite Gus Poyet withdrawn, their replacements then combined as Leonhardsen crossed for Rebrov to get in on the act.

A late lapse at the back allowed Forssell to regain a semblance of respectability, but no one at White Hart Lane seemed to care.
