Barcelona
hold "a great advantage" heading into the second leg of their last-16
Champions League tie with Chelsea at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night,
according to Antonio Conte.
The Premier League champions drew 1-1 with Barca in the first encounter,
with Lionel Messi's late strike - his first-ever against Chelsea at the
ninth attempt - cancelling out Willian's effort at Stamford Bridge.
Conte, however, thinks his side still have a chance of progressing to the
quarter-finals of Europe's premier club competition, the draw for which
takes place on Friday morning.
"It's a fantastic stadium with a big pitch," said the Italian. "I think that
every single player must be excited playing this type of game. A lot of my
players have never played in this stadium. This is the first time and we
want to do our best.
"In the first leg we played a really good game - almost a perfect game -
against a team I consider one of the best in the world. The final result for
the first leg gives a great advantage to Barcelona. We know their philosophy
will be to win the game and we have to try to do our best, have great
concentration and keep our heads."
Meanwhile, Willian says Chelsea must play the "perfect" game to advance to
the last eight.
A memorable display in adversity at the Nou Camp saw Chelsea advance ahead
of Barca in April 2012 and they went on to win the competition.
"I was watching that game, but for me every game has history," the Brazilian
said when asked about that 2-2 draw.
"This game already is in the past. Tomorrow will be a new history, new game.
"I think for us to go through we have to do a perfect game with the ball and
without the ball. That's the most important thing. To go through to the next
round we have to do a perfect game tomorrow."
Ernesto Valverde, though, knows Chelsea's counter-attacking ability, with
players like Eden Hazard and Willian, means Barca must capitalise on any
dominant spells they may have in the game.
"We will try to find a secret formula," said the Barca boss, whose team are
eyeing up an 11th straight Champions League quarter-final.
"I don't think we have it, but just to keep working, keep pushing, keep
trying.
"(But) it's a double-edged sword. We cannot be on top of them for the whole
match, because the last season they were the team with the best counter
attack in the Premier League."
Willian scored in the first leg and has five goals in five games. Valverde
knows the Brazilian is a danger to the Catalans.
"He's been playing really great with Chelsea," he said.
"He's finding the back of the net easily. He's a player we have to take into
account. When players of that quality are on a good streak they can score
easily."
Team news
Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta could return from a hamstring problem
which will be assessed in the hours before kick-off.
However, Valverde says the Spain international will only be selected if
fully fit, while both Nelson Semedo and Denis Suarez miss out with injury.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will be without midfielder Ross Barkley and centre-back
David Luiz with injury, although other than those two, Conte has a full
squad to select from.
Opta stats
68 per cent of away sides to draw the first leg of a Champions League
knockout tie 1-1 progressed to the next round (23/34).
Barcelona's record at home against English clubs in the Champions League:
W19, D11, L2.
This will be the 14th meeting between these sides in the Champions League -
only two fixtures have been played more often in the competition (Bayern v
Real Madrid 18, Barcelona v Milan 15).
Six of the 13 previous meetings have ended in draws (46 per cent) - of all
fixtures to have been played at least 10 times, only Chelsea vs Liverpool
has ended level more often (50 per cent - 5/10).
Chelsea are unbeaten in their last eight Champions League games against
Barcelona (W2 D6), with their last four visits to Camp Nou ending level.
Chelsea have been shown four red cards in Champions League games against
Barcelona, accounting for 33 per cent of their total red cards in the
competition (4/12).
Chelsea looked decent for some of the game against Crystal Palace when
Olivier Giroud was holding the ball up, allowing Willian and Eden Hazard to
be found in more advanced areas.
However, if Conte plays the same way as he did at Manchester City, which I
think he might, they will have no joy because they'll fail to get out of
their own half again.
Barcelona have improved defensively but you can still get at them because of
their attacking intent. I think if they've got Alvaro Morata or Giroud up
top then at least they'll be able to hold the ball up on a few occasions and
give Hazard the chance of getting the ball in areas he can do damage.
However, I can see him having another frustrating evening, knowing he's not
got the supply or support to show his potential, and will be left day
dreaming of playing against Barca for Real Madrid next season.
Lionel Messi had a nice rest at the weekend to be ready for this one, so I
don't give Chelsea much hope at all.
