UEFA
has confirmed a full investigation into an apparent racist attack in the
stands during Dynamo Kiev's Champions League game against Chelsea last week.
Four black fans were attacked in the home end during the Champions League
match last Tuesday and an independent investigator will go through the
footage, interview the clubs, security officials and fans before making a
decision about the case.
Sky Sports News HQ understands this could take some time, as UEFA is
concerned by the severity of the events and want to make sure the incident
is fully investigated.
Dynamo could face a severe punishment. Earlier this year, the club was fined
15,000 euros by European football's governing body following the racist
behaviour of their fans during a Europa League match against Everton at the
same venue.
The Ukrainian side were also punished for setting off fireworks and for
insufficient organisation during the 5-2 second leg win over the Toffees in
March.
UEFA also ordered partial closure of their home ground for the first leg of
the quarter-final against Fiorentina the following month.
One suggestion on how to solve the problem of racism at Kiev's Olympic
Stadium has caused even more controversy.
When asked by a Washington Post journalist how best to deal with the
situation, Dynamo's stadium manager hinted at segregating black fans from
other supporters.
Volodimir Spilchenko told the paper: "We are trying, maybe, to make a
separate sector [for black fans] in order to avoid racism."
But anti-discrimination chief Piara Powar has reacted with incredulity at
the suggestion the Russian club are considering such a proposal based on
skin colour.
FARE Network executive director Powar sad: "This was a fearsome attack and
then we have people who think it's quite within the realms of a sensible
response to just be trivialising the matter by suggesting separate areas of
the stadium. It's utterly ridiculous.
"This isn't an initiative that comes from him, but it's a measure of how
hopeless some of these guys are at that level and how trivial they think the
whole issue is.
"There aren't enough black fans in Kiev - in the whole of Kiev, let alone
attending Dynamo Kiev - to have a separate stand. And if there were we'd
know what would happen. They'd just be attacked."
