Chelsea
cemented their place at the top of the Women’s Super League with a 4-1
victory over bottom club Bristol Academy.
The Academy defence showed their frailties early on, falling behind after
failing to clear a free-kick that allowed Gilly Flaherty to score from close
range after Millie Bright’s effort was blocked.
The home side doubled their advantage through Gemma Davison on 20 minutes as
she powered into the box before calmly slipping the ball into the
bottom-right corner.
England striker Eni Aluko was forced off shortly afterwards after picking up
a knock and was replaced by fellow international Katie Chapman.
Bristol began to get into the game and pulled a goal back 10 minutes after
the restart, new signing Jade Boho-Sayo confidently slotting home.
But Chelsea soon restored their two-goal margin, as substitute Ji So-Yun was
brought down by Frankie Brown in the box before converting the penalty
herself.
Emma Hayes’ side then rounded off the scoring with a fourth goal on 81
minutes as another sub, Millie Farrow, beat Bristol ‘keeper Mary Earps to
the ball and poked it into the net as she rushed out to block.
