Roberto
Di Matteo has been appointed as the new head coach of German Bundesliga side
Schalke.
The former Chelsea boss ends an absence of almost two years from the game by
succeeding Jens Keller, who was sacked on Tuesday morning following an
indifferent start to the season.
He will come up against former club Chelsea next month when Schalke host
Jose Mourinho’s side in the Champions League in Gelsenkirchen on November
25.
Di Matteo led Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League in 2012, stepping up from
his role as assistant manager to replace Andre Villas-Boas after the
Portuguese was dismissed in March 2012.
He signed a two-year contract to become permanent manager at Chelsea that
summer, but departed in November that year following a 3-0 Champions League
defeat to Juventus.
The 44-year-old began his managerial career at MK Dons, but left after a
year to take charge at West Brom where he guided the Baggies to automatic
promotion from the Championship in his first season.
