Chelsea
midfielder Cesc Fabregas has had his suspension reduced to one match
following his red card against West Brom on Monday evening.
Fabregas was sent off for kicking the ball at Chris Brunt during a break in
play and stood to serve a three-match ban under Football Association rules.
But an independent panel has now reduced the length of that suspension to
one game, meaning the Spain international misses the final game of the
season against Sunderland but will be available from the start of the new
season.
A statement from Chelsea read: "The standard sanction would have been a
three-match suspension.
"However, following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing earlier
today (Wednesday), the club's claim that a three-match suspension is
excessive was successful."
Speaking after the 3-0 defeat at the Hawthorns, Jose Mourinho had said: "For
me a top referee, a stable, big personality and in control of the game, goes
there, two or three words and it's done. It's a bizarre red card.
"A three game ban for this? Harsh? Of course it's harsh. Why does he have to
explain? He doesn't need to explain."
