Ladies have signed a world-class footballer in Gemma Davison, according to
manager Emma Hayes.
Former Arsenal forward Davison joined Chelsea from Liverpool last month and
is the first of four acquisitions made by the club during the close season.
“I don’t think people realise how much Gemma has done outside of Arsenal,”
Hayes told Sky Sports.
“She’s played with the likes of Marta, Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair at
Western New York Flash who were one of the best teams in the world. She’s an
accomplished footballer who could have signed for any club in world
football.
“There were top clubs wanting to sign Gemma and she chose us. I am
privileged she has given me the opportunity to sign her and my goal is to
help her get more goals and get her into the England team on a regular
basis.”
Davison left Liverpool after winning the FA Women’s Super League title last
season and Hayes believes the 27-year-old arrives at Chelsea as a better
player following her spell on Merseyside.
“I was hopeful Gemma would have come to us last year when she left Arsenal
but it just wasn’t meant to be,” the Chelsea boss said.
“To be fair, going to Liverpool has improved her all round game and I think
she comes to us as an even better prospect because she has had to play in a
team which is more direct.
“She’s had to work harder from the front and improve the defensive side of
her game and I think she’s done that
“I expect Gemma to come in and be a big player for us. I think she’s at that
point in her career where she is experienced enough to do that.”
